Cost efficient supply chain

Over the last 10 years, Retailware Softech Pvt. Ltd has successfully carried out several IT projects by supplying solutions for the retail sector. The company has partnered with Tata Consultancy Services, Microsoft, Motorola and HP.

The Pune-based Jaihind Collections is a well-known multi-brand retailer for men’s wear. It has come up with a problem of over-taxation in their supply chain. Retailware provided the right solution to overcome the hurdle.

CASE STUDY

Requirement:  Jaihind Collections (JC Retail India Pvt Ltd) has a central warehouse in Pune where goods arrive from suppliers and purchases are entered, barcode labels generated and affixed, and after that, goods are dispatched to three large format stores (branches) within Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits. The new branch that came up in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) limits posed a new challenge. Goods coming into PMC had to suffer Octroi levied by the PMC on the inward journey to the warehouse. These goods when transferred to the branches within PMC had no repeat incidence of Octroi. But if these goods were sent to the PCMC branch, they would again suffer Octroi levied by the PCMC authorities thereby doubling the impact on costs. Hence it was advisable to make suppliers send goods directly to the PCMC branch and bear only the Octroi levied by the PCMC authorities.

Challenge:  Being a typical multi-branch scenario, Product Master Creation (cataloguing) was to be done at the central warehouse. Retailware has this efficient facility of creating masters automatically during the process of purchase for apparel products (unlike a supermarket, a garment store thrives on variety and almost every purchase invoice will have a new SKU). If purchases are entered at the branch, Product Masters would be created at the branch thereby violating the basic principles of an integrated Product Catalogue.

Solution:  Retailware conceptualised “`emPu” (Remote Purchase Module) especially for this situation wherein the operator at the PCMC branch enters a purchase voucher as he would have done at the warehouse while Retailware Windows and Web Services work in the background to create Product Masters at the warehouse and relay this information back to the remote branch.

Benefits:  The freedom to create new masters at a remote branch means goods can arrive at the branch directly for cataloguing and barcoding without having to go through the warehouse, thereby saving a huge amount of money for Octroi.
