Flipkart to get more sellers
Flipkart is beginning an aggressive campaign from Thursday to get many more sellers on to its platform.
Through the campaign called "Apne sapno ko jee kar dekho" (Try to live your dreams) India's biggest online retailer is seeking to increase the number of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs on its platform from 30,000 now to 100,000 by the end of 2015.
"There are many retailers who have shut down their business offline and grown ten times more online. With internet penetration growing very fast, we are providing a platform for even working professionals, who want to start a business, to sell online," said chief business officer Ankit Nagori.
The media campaign, which will be conducted for a month-and-a-half, will seek to create a "sense of urgency" among SMEs across over 15 cities, including Jaipur, Indore, Pune, Ludhiana, Surat, Ahmedabad, Visakhapatnam and Coimbatore, apart from the major metros.
Flipkart was a late entrant into the marketplace model, under which third-party merchants sell their products on the online platform. The company started with the inventory model, where it would buy, store and sell products all on its own. On the contrary, competitor Snapdeal, as also Amazon in India, started as marketplaces. Snapdeal currently has a seller base of more than 100,000. Amazon has around 25,000 sellers.
