In order to dominate the Indian market, Amazon India has made another ace move by venturing into the furniture sales segment. The global giant recently revealed that now, its Indian unit will sell furniture online. To provide additional strength to the move, company will be setting up another five fulfillment centres (FC) across the country.
According to Sumit Sahay, Director, Category Management, Amazon the e-commerce behemoth has just launched its range of furniture products and would set up three out of the five FCs in Tamil Nadu. Currently, company is equipped with 22 FCs including one centre in Chennai.
Amazon’s Indian unit has been performing extremely well and recently it has registered 250 per cent growth in its annual sale. The unit’s annual profit has also gone up by 150 per cent which clearly indicates that its newly formed policies and recent funding have pushed the right button.
The warehouse space with the e-commerce giant, which recently crossed the milestone of 1-lakh sellers on an overall basis, would increase to 7.5 million cubic feet from the present 6 million cu. ft by the end of the current year. The option of buying furniture is available only in about 20 cities. Buyers would be able to place orders only if they reside within a certain distance from the seller, adds Sahay.
