Smartphones battle at Amazon
Amazon India has become a battleground for smartphone companies Apple and Samsung who are outsmarting each other to sell the most discounted products.
Companies who sell smartphones most-Apple and Samsung are contesting each other to sell smartphones at discounted rates at the online platform hosted by Amazon. These companies are selling them exclusively on the portal and the same product is not available for customers at their offline stores.
Apple has lowered prices of iPhone 5c, its slow on sales model by around 30 per cent. The product is exclusively available on Amazon. On the other hand, Samsung, the Korean brand has followed up giving 23% discount on its flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone on the website.
Unsold inventory by the companies related to the two models are being let off on the portal. According to an estimate, the two companies have sold almost 1 lakh units together on Amazon. As per records, this is the highest ever for these models through one point of sales.
"It's a strategic move by Apple and Samsung to focus on two of the fastest-growing smartphone segments where their presence has been limited," said Tarun Pathak, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research.
Previously, Samsung did not have a noticeable presence in the Rs 15,000-20,000 segment. It strengthened by smart selling the Galaxy S4 atRs 17,999 on Amazon.
Apple similarly lessened the price of the iPhone 5c to Rs 22,990 to fill a void after it pulled out the iPhone 4 from the market.
Pathak analyses from the Amazon-only sales strategy that eCommerce in India is fast gaining maturity to have attracted two of the largest smartphone brands.
"These two brands have sold substantial number of the handsets which will boost their market share too. More such online-only deals are expected this year and we expect e-commerce contribution to overall smartphone sales in India to touch 30% this year from 15% in 2014," said Pathak.
Samsung has chosen Amazon as its sales channel for its other products as well. Its latest models Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, were launched just the other day.
In the Rs 20,000-plus smartphone category, currently Samsung leads, followed by Apple, which contributes a third of the sales.
