Amazon India appoints Manish Tiwary to head category management

Tiwary will now look after Amazon's expansion in the country into new categories and exclusive partnerships.

Country’s leading eCommerce portal Amazon India has recently onboarded FMCG baron Manish Tiwary as the VP- Category Management in order to further build momentum of its India business. Tiwary, with his rich 20 year stint at Hindustan Uniliver, will replace the current VP Samir Kumar, who is shifting back to Amazon’s headquarter in Seattle this year.

The US-based eCommerce major was looking for a replacement for Kumar from quite sometime (Indianretailer reported earlier). Kumar has been responsible for company’s India operations and have been helping build the team which has led to an outstanding customer delight.

Tiwary will now look after Amazon’s expansion in the country into new categories and also exclusive partnerships, which has increasingly become key in large e-tailing categories like smartphone.

An IIM- Bangalore alumni and BTech in Computers, Tiwary started his career with Hindustan Unilever in the year 1996. He started this journey as the Brand Manager for Unilever’s Pond brand and went ahead to be the Managing Director of Unilever’s Gulf division.

This will be Amazon’s second hire for the VP designate in one year. The company has recently appointed former Citi Bank exec Sriraman Jagannathan to head its payments business. Tiwary’s appointment come ahead of Amit Agarwal elevation to the core team of senior leaders who have a direct line to its Founder & CEO Jeff Bezos which he calls the S- team.

Tiwary will be taking over from Kumar, who has worked at Amazon since 1999. Kumar was part of the India launch team along with country head Amit Agarwal and head of seller services Amit Deshpande, who also moved back to US office in 2015.
