India's third largest software firm WiproBSE 0.93 % has named former TCS back-office business head Abid Ali Neemuchwala as its first ever chief operating officer, kicking off the process of succession planning at Wipro.
ET first reported that Wipro would create a COO position -- similar to that of US-based Cognizant and Infosys -- that would free up CEO TK Kurien to focus on future strategic vision.
Larger rivals TCS and Infosys have had similar succession strategies centered around the COO. At TCS, N. Chandrasekaran served as COO before taking over from S. Ramadorai, while at Infosys S. Gopalakrishnan took over as CEO from Nandan Nilekani and SD Shibulal succeeded Gopalakrishnan.
ET first reported on Monday that Wipro will begin a process to identify and groom a successor to chief executive TK Kurien later this year, with Neemuchwala being considered for the position of chief operating officer a long with other internal and external candidates.
"Abid brings invaluable experience with his track record of building and scaling businesses. I am confident his deep understanding of technology and expertise in all facets of IT & BPS businesses will help power our businesses to greater heights," said Kurien in a statement on Monday.
