Festivals are important for Indian shoppers as they go liberal on their shopping spree during festival seasons. As such India is a land of festivals, but national festivals have their unique charm. Retailers too understand the fact and leave no stone unturned to woo the customers. Retailers across categories are trying to entice customers this Independence Day.

Retail majors I-Day special offers

Leading retailer Big Bazaar has come up with Mahabachat offer which has already started from 10 of August and will remain continue till 15th August 2013. During this period customers can avail mega deals and discounts on various items including grocery, fashion, home decore, electronics and fashion. Speaking on the occasion  Akshay Mehrotra, Chief Marketing Officer, Big Bazaar, “6 days of Big Bazaar’s Mahabachat is the most awaited shopping period for India Masses. It is a testimony to our belief as a retailer in providing the maximum saving and value to our customers.” He added, “There is a major concern among people about the weakening of Indian rupee, and it directly affects the prices of regular purchased products and monthly budget of every household. Croma, leading consumer durables and electronics chain, has come up with ‘Croma Independence Sale’ 2013.  This is a month long activity during which customers can avail lucrative discounts on various product categories, including phones, camera, computers, entertainment and home appliance. Ajit Joshi, MD & CEO, Infiniti Retail, says, “We are thrilled to announce the Croma Independence Sale, which has been well received by our customers in the past. This year too, the special offers are a gesture from our side to celebrate Independence Day by providing best bargains on electronics and consumer durable for our discerning patrons.”

Getting high on food                                                                       

Food is essence of every Indian festival. A national festival is yet another occasion which receives good turn around, and yet another opportunity for food retailers to cash in on festive mood. Prominent ice-cream and frozen yogurt retailer Gelato Vinto has prepared a tri-colour menu specific to Independence Day. Vijay Arora, Managing Director of Gelato Vinto India, shares, "The reason for this flavour is merely out of spirit of Independence Day and the related shades of the flag which matches the gelato. Also we cannot have exact colours as of national flag because in past such activities practiced in this industry have not been appreciated by legal advisory.”

Yet another food retailer Amsterdam Kitchen & Bar has launched “Veg Lasagna” for the special occasion. Sanuj Birla, Owner, Amsterdam- Kitchen & Bar, Saket, said, “We all have different ways of celebrating Independence Day. This came as an idea to bring the spirit of independence into our restaurant for the families coming out to enjoy a meal on 15th August. And what better way to celebrate Independence Day with a great tri-colour sumptuous meal.”
Joining the league Uber Lounge has announced “True Indian” cheese cake for this festival.

CSR Initiative from brand Lush on I-Day

Leading handmade cosmetic brand Lush has launched an initiative in association with NGO Samabhava to urge people to reduce their consumption of animal based products, not only in Cosmetics but also in food, clothing, as well as other uses. Marking the development, Sangeeta Kamath, Director, Lush Fresh Homemade Cosmetics, said," we believe that Independence Day is the best occasion to promote ‘Freedom from Cruelty for Animals’. Prominent actress Amala is also joining us in this pious cause." Lush has also launched its new product  'Charity Pot'  on I-Day.

The Nature's Co, leading retailer of skin, hair and body products, has announced a flat 50 per cent discount on its selected products.

Handicraft retailers are too in fray

The prominent handicraft retailer The Vedic Collection is celebrating Independence Day by launching ‘Barni’ collection which includes tea light holder and candle. Divita Kanoria, Chief Wellness Officer, Vedic Collection, states, “On independence day we are giving a portion of our sales proceeds to ASFI and Acid Survivors foundation of India as we strongly believe in fighting injustice.”
