New Delhi: Future Group owned Big Bazaar store in Tripura recently came into limelight for keeping a minor girl in its custody for hours on shoplifting charges after being caught on the store’s CCTV camera. The accused has committed suicide lately in Tripura. The said store is shut now after the spread of the news and the outcry of the locals. While Big Bazaar has handed over the case to the local police and administration, the question here is, such situation can happen with any retail store in our country.
As per Reliance Retail’s CEO, Damodal Mall, the following steps should work in avoiding such incidents in a retail store.
1. Store layout: A retail store should have the layout to ensure that cashiers can see most part of the store.
2. CCTV cameras: CCTV cameras has actual and a lot of moral impact on tendency to lift. It makes sense to keep at least one monitoring screen visible to the customer. Customers, when they know they are being watched, won’t break rules.
3. Greeting customers: As per Mall, Walmart store has a rule for its employees. It asks them, whenever customer is within 5 ft of you, look into her eye and politely greet her. When people’s eyes meet and they are acknowledged, the chances of stealing drops drastically!
