Mattel, Inc. (Nasdaq: MAT), AirConsole, and BMW Group have jointly announced the upcoming launch of an innovative in-car gaming version of the classic card game UNO. The game, titled "UNO Car Party!," will be officially unveiled next week at Gamescom 2024 in Cologne, Germany, the world’s largest video game event. Visitors to the AirConsole booth (Hall 10.1, Stand B028 - C029) will have the opportunity to be among the first to experience this new gaming feature inside the BMW X3, which has been specially designed to offer in-car entertainment.
The game will be made available to over 500,000 BMW and MINI vehicles through an over-the-air update via the AirConsole platform on August 21st.
“We continue to increase the value of the overall digital experience for our customers. Our partners AirConsole and Mattel are helping make in-car gaming into a new social experience, and I am thrilled to offer a family-favorite game like UNO for this exciting innovation,” said Stephan Durach, Senior Vice President, BMW Group Development Connected Company and Technical Operations.
The collaborative effort between Mattel, AirConsole, and BMW Group has resulted in a unique adaptation of UNO, making it accessible in a new environment: the car. The game, designed to bring people together, allows up to four players to join in using their personal devices as controllers while playing on the car’s infotainment system. The gameplay is activated only when the vehicle is in a park, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all passengers.
Anthony Cliquot, CEO, AirConsole shared, “UNO beautifully illustrates the strengths of AirConsole with a game accessible to everyone, a bespoke integration to the car hardware, and our phone controlled gaming experience. Each player can secretly see their own cards on their phone while playing on the infotainment system of the car. This is an experience that would be impossible to achieve using only touchscreen or Bluetooth controls on the infotainment system.”
"UNO is perfect for in-car gaming because it's highly engaging and brings people together. Its simple rules are easy to learn and endlessly captivating, making it ideal for both short pit stops and extended play sessions. UNO’s social nature turns every journey into a fun experience, and we're so excited to bring this spirit to consumers in an innovative way with our partners at BMW and AirConsole,” stated Erika Winterholler, Head of Business Development, Digital Gaming at Mattel.
The partnership between the BMW Group and AirConsole, which began in 2022, has been instrumental in pioneering in-car gaming. The collaboration has introduced a range of games to BMW vehicles, including popular titles like “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”, which premiered as an in-car exclusive in partnership with Sony Pictures Television, BMW Group, and AirConsole.
UNO, with its five-decade-long legacy of providing unpredictable fun, competition, and inclusivity, continues to evolve. From physical products to mobile games, and now in-car gaming, UNO remains a beloved game that delights fans around the world with its ever-expanding offerings.
