Victorinox’s story began in 1884, when Karl Elsener established a cutlery workshop in Ibach, Switzerland. In 1897, he created the Original Swiss Officer’s and Sports Knife, which went on to become the globally recognised Swiss Army Knife. Over the years, the brand has evolved from a specialist knife manufacturer into a global lifestyle brand, built on Swiss precision, functionality, quality and innovation. The brand’s significant milestones include the introduction of watches.
‘‘Our entry into watchmaking in 1989 marked an important chapter in this evolution. Watches allowed us to bring our Swiss heritage and engineering-led approach into a category where durability, precision and design are equally important,’’ says Debraj Sengupta, Managing Director – Sales & Marketing, Victorinox India.
Today, collections such as I.N.O.X., Maverick, Air Pro and Dive Pro reflect different aspects of the brand’s watchmaking philosophy, catering to consumers who value reliability as much as aesthetics.
Debraj says, ‘‘For us, the objective has always been to create watches that are built for everyday life, while retaining the quality and character associated with Swiss Made craftsmanship.’’
‘‘Victorinox’s journey in India has been shaped by the opportunity to bring Swiss craftsmanship and quality to a market with a strong appreciation for premium products, says Debraj. Today, we see immense potential in India, particularly in how consumers connect with brands beyond the product itself.’’
India is a culturally rich, celebration-driven market where festivals, weddings and family occasions play a significant role in purchasing decisions. This creates a natural opportunity for Victorinox to strengthen its positioning as a premium gifting choice.
Globally, Victorinox has a presence in over 120 countries, supported by a strong international distribution network.
Talking about the brand’s retail presence, Debraj said, ‘‘We have built our presence over time, and our focus now is on deepening that reach while maintaining the quality of the consumer experience. We are looking at opportunities to improve product availability, increase consumer awareness and build stronger relationships with retail partners.
Internationally, the brand’s global network gives it a strong foundation, while locally in India, Victorinox priority is to identify markets where the brand has room to grow sustainably.
‘‘For us, expansion is not simply about adding locations; it is about ensuring that every point of contact reflects the standards and values of Victorinox,’’says Debraj.

Victorinox has a diverse portfolio built around functionality, precision and enduring quality. The core global categories include Swiss army knives, household and professional knives, watches, and travel gear. Each category serves a different consumer need, but all are connected by the same philosophy of creating products that are practical, dependable and thoughtfully designed.
‘‘Our watches combine Swiss Made craftsmanship with durability and contemporary design, with collections such as I.N.O.X. and Maverick catering to different consumer preferences. Our travel gear focuses on the needs of modern travellers, while our kitchen and professional knives bring precision and performance to everyday cooking and professional use. The strength of our portfolio lies in this diversity: we can engage with consumers across different aspects of their lives while maintaining a consistent brand philosophy, says Debraj.
This year, through the brand’s association with Abhay Deol, Victorinox has built a more meaningful connection with Indian consumers, incorporating occasions such as Raksha Bandhan, Diwali and the wedding season into the campaigns.
‘‘For a watch brand, the right collaboration can help communicate a great deal about its identity without relying solely on product features, says Debraj. ‘‘Watches often reflect personal choices, individual style and the way people value their time. A relevant brand face can bring these ideas to life and help consumers connect with the brand on a more personal level.’’
The brand’s association with Abhay Deol is rooted in this thinking. His authenticity, understated confidence and thoughtful approach align with the qualities Victorinox wants to represent. Through such collaborations, the brand can introduce its watches to new audiences while reinforcing the brand's Swiss heritage and emphasis on quality.
Discussing the campaign Debraj said, ‘‘As a Swiss brand, we want to go beyond showcasing our products and connect with the traditions, emotions and moments that matter to Indian consumers. We believe the opportunity lies in combining Victorinox’s Swiss heritage with a deeper understanding of Indian culture, making the brand more relatable while retaining the quality, craftsmanship and timelessness it stands for.’’
Victorinox’ omnichannel strategy is built around being present wherever the target consumer and the urbanist spends their time.
‘‘For our recent brand campaign, we adopted a targeted approach, revolving around platforms such as OTT and Meta to connect with consumers during their leisure time, corporate screens to engage them in the workplace, cinema to reach them during entertainment, and retail touchpoints to reinforce the brand at the point of purchase. The idea is to create multiple opportunities for consumers to encounter Victorinox across online and offline channels, building consistent brand visibility and recall throughout their day, says Debraj.
Analysing the lifestyle market in India, Debraj highlights that the Indian lifestyle market is becoming increasingly aspirational, with consumers looking beyond just utility or brand name when making a purchase.
The consumers today are paying greater attention to design, craftsmanship, authenticity, personal expression and the value a product offers over time. Premiumisation is an important part of this shift, but it is less about spending more money, and more about making considered choices.
There are several factors driving this evolution, including rising aspirations, greater exposure to global brands, digital discovery, international travel and the growing importance of personal style.
Debraj says, ‘‘I also see a stronger appreciation for products that combine aesthetics with functionality and remain relevant beyond a particular trend or season. For Victorinox, this presents an encouraging opportunity because our proposition is rooted in quality, reliability and purposeful design. Our focus is on communicating these values clearly and demonstrating why a well-crafted product can deliver lasting value.’’
Influencer marketing allows lifestyle brands to demonstrate how different collections fit into everyday life, whether through personal style, travel or individual pursuits.
‘‘However, we believe that credibility is more important than visibility alone. Every collaboration must feel natural to the brand and provide consumers with a genuine reason to engage with it,’’ says Debraj. Citing an example, he adds, ‘‘Our Spend Your Time Wisely campaign, for instance, gives us an opportunity to communicate the value of time through the lens of watchmaking and personal choices. Such initiatives can help us reach new audiences, strengthen brand recall and build an emotional connection, provided they are supported by a clear and consistent brand message.’’
Talking about the brand’s future plans, Debraj says, ‘‘Our priority is to build on Victorinox's heritage while preparing the brand for the next phase of growth in India. We see opportunities to strengthen our presence across existing categories, expand our reach into emerging markets and improve the way consumers discover and experience our products. We also want to continue developing a stronger connection with Indian consumers by understanding their preferences and responding to them in ways that remain true to the brand.’’
He adds, ''Innovation will remain central to the our products and how we engage with the market. Our watches, for example, demonstrate how Swiss craftsmanship can evolve through contemporary design and new functionality, while still retaining the durability and reliability associated with Victorinox.''
Victorinox will continue to focus on its retail partnerships, digital presence and consumer experience. Ultimately, the brand’s ambition is not just to grow in scale, but to build a stronger, more relevant and enduring brand in India.
‘‘We want consumers to see Victorinox not only as a brand with a rich Swiss heritage, but as a trusted companion across different aspects of their lives,’’ concludes Debraj.
