How it all started? What was the EUREKA moment?

The business of CKC GROUP has been in existence for over 145 years now. The thoughts of taking forward the business through various forms began in the period 2002-2009, post the liberalisation efforts by the Government of India. In 2009 we signed an internal agreement with board resolutions to promote various wings / divisions within the group involving all directors at that time. The Eureka moment, if one could call it so, was in 2009 when all members agreed to progress forward, including taking franchising. 

What do you think of the gems and diamond industry growing in India?

Highly challenging; One aspect that comes to the forefront is that it is a highly capital intensive sector, and profits being on the lower side, one needs to be extremely innovative in all aspects of business. Combination of creativity in business products and in management plays a vital part. Because of the increase in demand of gems and diamonds mainly from the middle class segment, the growth of business in India is quite assured. 

What about your distribution network?

Presently we operate five retail outlets in Bengaluru within our CKC GROUP. C Krishniah Chetty Jewellers on Margosa operates two new stores added in the last 12 months. The other three stores are operated by C Krishniah Chetty & Sons. Together, we have these 5 stores that hold a pole position in the market today. 

Have you tried selling online?

Yes indeed, we do have a strong online presence. We have a portal named www. Ckcjewellers.com. It offers modern designs and is updated by the new team at C Krishniah Chetty Jewllers. 

How do you choose location for your stores?

Selecting an ideal location as per your business is very important. We do an analysis of what suits our brand. We have also realised that whatever location we chose will not necessarily be chosen by other jewellers. We do not practice a ‘herd’ mentality. But, normally our own selection based on the profiling of our clients. 

What are the benefits of operating from your own habitat?

You have better in hand control at the beginning stages of expansion. However, franchising later does have its indisputable advantages.
