Selling a sound sleep!
Peps Industries has been offering quality mattresses in the country since decades and now plans to come up with exclusive outlets across India. In an interview, K Madhavan, MD, of the company speaks about the growth potential the mattress segment offers.

In the last ten years, the overall sale of mattress has increased in the country and there has been growing demand of mattresses. What is your take on this?

Mattress industry in the country is growing by at least 30 percent in the country. In the last four years, the growth in the coir and foam segments has come down, and there is a trend for the consumers to switch over to inner spring mattresses.

Even though spring mattresses were introduced in India more than 15 years back, there is no major  quality spring mattress brand in India  which has pan India presence catering to the different segments and here Peps makes difference. Peps has become the category leader within a span of eight years.

The company is growing at the rate of close to 40 percent clearly indicating the change in consumer preference for quality inner spring mattresses. Currently, spring segment constitutes roughly 10 percent of overall branded mattress market of around Rs 3,000 crore.

How do you position your mattress and other related products?

Peps spring mattresses are being manufactured as per the quality standards followed by developed countries like US, thanks to the technology know how from Restonic of USA.
The promoters of Peps are having more than 70 years of cumulative total experience in mattress industry which has immensely helped the management team  in terms of  understanding the specific market requirement and coming out with right kinds of products. Peps has different models suiting to the specific requirement of different segments.
Over the years,

What fresh concepts and new ideas you have seen coming in this segment and what new elements you have introduced in your products?

In the developed countries mattress means spring mattresses. In India people were using cotton mattresses earlier and slowly graduated to using coir and foam mattresses in the seventies. Spring mattresses were introduced in the country around 15 years back. May be because the pioneers in the country in spring mattresses had not adopted the right kind of technology or because they did not address the specific consumer needs none of them could succeed in building a reputed spring mattress brand and establishing a nationwide network. Peps has filled this vacuum.

What is your plan for next two years? What new products you are going to launch?
