The US- based Maui Jim has aggressively expanded its presence in the country  over the past few years, and it currently offers more than 200 SKUs and 86 ‘styles’ to patrons in the premium segment.

In a conversation, I Rahumathullah, Managing Director, Maui Jim India highlighted their India-related strategy.

The eyewear market in the country is very competitive. Kindly highlight your brand’s activities in the country?

We entered the local market in ’08, and while competition from existing players is rather intense, but our target audience of high-end customers who travel overseas are well aware of the brand.

In addition, we have also differentiated ourselves from peers via advanced products like  polarised technology sunglasses.

What is the USP of your brand?

Our USP is the state-of-the-art products we offer, and it enables our patrons to get effective protection against harmful ultraviolet radiation.

Kindly highlight the key trends in the eyewear segment?

Earlier, sunglasses were considered an essential element in the style ‘quotient’, but currently consumers are paying increased emphasis on suitable protection for their eyes, while purchasing a product in this category.

What is your marketing and distribution strategy for the Indian market?  

We are focusing on the prescription segment and as a result, derive a significant portion of our sales from opticians. In addition, we also have a retail network of 100 outlets on a pan India basis in key metros and emerging smaller towns.

And, we rely on in-store promotions for spreading greater awareness of our product range
