We plan to expand to 30 clubs

Fitness First, a leading health and fitness group, has more than 380 clubs in Europe, Asia and Australia, and is currently implementing an expansion in its activities in India. In a candid conversation with Rahul Verma, Stefan Tilk, MD, Fitness First shares their strategy to stay ahead in this highly competitive segment here, as well as his insight on consumer behaviour.

Rahul Verma (RV): Kindly highlight Fitness First’s presence in India, and how do you differentiate yourself in this segment?

Stefan Tilk (ST): Fitness First has a presence in over 15 countries. In India, we are presently operating from six clubs in New Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai. However, our operations here are much smaller vis-a-vis Australia, Germany and the UK. We are also a ‘premium’ global brand in this segment, and apart from a range of customised fitness sessions, we also offer healthy diet options to our customers.

RV:  Fitness First had recently announced plans for expanding its presence in overseas markets. Kindly highlight your expansion strategy in India?

ST: Yes, India is a key focus in our expansion strategy in Asia. We are planning to expand our presence here to 30 more clubs over the next five years.

RV:  The capex involved?

ST: Nearly Rs 160 crore over the next five years. We have Fitness First club in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, and they are company managed. We shortly plan to open three more clubs in Delhi and Mumbai, and recognising the shortage of suitably trained professionals here, we have developed suitable programs.

RV: Can you throw light on consumer behaviour patterns here, given the current economic slump?

ST: Clearly, being fit is an important goal and our membership base here has grown. And, membership to our clubs is for around Rs 100 per day, and it is has been well received by consumers here. We are confident of realising strong growth opportunities here over the long-term.

RV: What is your fitness mantra?

ST: ‘Just do it, what you want to do’, and I do enjoy my daily exercise routine.
