We will get everybody's Mojo Workin': Anand Mahindra

Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group demonstrates company’s vision of the ‘Future of Mobility’ with motors that are clean, clever, convenient, cost effective and connected.

The global two-wheeler industry is ripe with examples of clean technology scooters and gas-guzzling innovative machines. Mahindra & Mahindra’s, part of the US $16.9 billion Mahindra Group, racing superbike MGP30, along with its 100 per cent electric two-wheeler, GenZe 2.0, which also made its US debut recently, could be two of the many ‘Indian’ examples tackling environmental concerns and leveraging technology for innovation.

This year will be a very interesting time for the Indian Automotive industry, says Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group. During the global debut of Mahindra racing and unveiling of the new Mahindra superbike, Anand talks about the International racing scene and the excitement it brings to the Group, his commitment to a clean and green environment and the launch of Mojo Tribe Riders Club by Mahindra.

You’d launched two motors on the auto conclave held recently, Mahindra Racing 2016 MGP30 Motorcycle and GenZe 2.0, talk us through the idea behind the machineries of these.
We are delighted that the new Mahindra Racing 2016 MGP3O motorcycle made its global debut in NCR. This motorcycle is the first all new product that has emerged from Mahindra Racing’s development centre in Italy. It is also evidence of Mahindra’s growing technical skill in the development of world class high performance racing machinery. We are also very proud to be bringing back the Peugeot Motocycles name to international racing. Our innovative GenZe 2.0 electric two wheeler, which made its US debut in January, was also showcased at the Expo in NCR.

Mahindra GenZe is a 100 per cent electric vehicle. It is designed to help alleviate challenges associated with less availability of parking space and pollution. Its battery can be recharged at standard electrical outlets. It has connectivity features, like it is designed for a seamless IoT communication that allows monitoring of its parameters regularly.

Mahindra is going big on technological innovations and ‘Future of Mobility’ in India. What do you see the Group approaching in terms of auto industry in the country?
Embodying technological expertise of the brand is Mahindra’s venture in to international motorsport by way of developing the Formula E racing car, M2Electro, the all new electric car for International championships. Mahindra’s is also going to taking the learning and technical progress made on the race-track into the development of a new generation of electric road cars. These road cars also demonstrate Mahindra's vision of the ‘Future of Mobility’ with motors that are clean, clever, convenient, cost effective and connected.

We are working on building aspirations of the people here and starting a revolution of sorts in the country. The idea is to get everything, from two wheelers to trucks to racing cars to everything that is able to do justice to our 5-C vision I talked to you about. Today, the times have really shifted to making Formula E electric cars for racing.

At the developmental stage, we didn’t know where Formula E would go, but today we can proudly say that we know what’s going to be the future. We are really excited about our performances in ‘Season One’ and ‘Season Two’ of the championship.

Mahindra Two Wheelers also announced the launch of the Mojo Tribe, a club meant exclusively for owners of the recently launched Mojo motorcycle. What’s the broader idea behind launching the club?
The club brings together a group of biker enthusiasts who navigate every turn and enjoy the groove to celebrate the spirit of individuality. Mahindra Two Wheelers was launched two months back, and for us it is one of the most anticipated launches. The Mojo celebrates the joy of rising in the spirit of brotherhood.

We owe it to our fans. And to engage with them we created a group called ‘Mojo Tribe’. We believe that we are giving them a way of life today. With the launch of some concept vehicles, along with racing and aspirational auto motors Mahindra is ready to take on the auto industry here. We are selling these vehicles one by one, with a lot of passion.

What’s the story behind the name, Mojo?
When I first heard the Muddy Waters’ song ‘Got My Mojo Workin’’ I couldn’t understand a word of it but the tune started making sense to me and I started enjoying. I remembered that song until today not because I knew what it meant when I first heard it, but because the tune remained with me all these years. Then, after sometime I searched for what the word ‘Mojo’ meant, and it said ‘Magic Charm’.

Mahindra Mojo will get everybody’s Mojo working, especially that of the bikers’, who, although individualistic but don’t mind connecting with people like themselves. The Mojo Tribe brings together a brotherhood of people who exemplify the true spirit of riding.
