Case Study

HyperCITY is one-of- a kind retail format deployed by Shoppers Stop,  a leading retail chain in India owned by The Raheja Group, in order to diversify and capitalise on the immense potential for hypermarkets. HyperCITY provides a truly international shopping experience and offers a wide and contemporary range of innovative products, sourced from both local and international markets.

Four years back when HyperCity ventured out to look for IT hardware vendors for their Point of Sale hardware, they were looking for vendors who could provide robust and state of the art checkout equipments and at the same time support the equipments throughout the year.

Challenge

In a hypermarket store like HyperCity, where the average number of items in a customer basket is in the range of 30-50, any contemporary Q-busting scanner-based-solution does not work as the cashier will have his hands-full literally with shopping items.

Solutions provided

Posiflex won the confidence above all others and since then have been supplying the chain with Posiflex Point of Sale terminals combined with the 360 degree Stratos scanners.  This combination helps the retailer in keeping the average checkout time for each customer to the minimum, thereby ensuring that there is not more than 3-4 people in a line at each counter. Recently, HyperCity deployed a mobile-trolley POS counter to increase the number of checkout counters at the store temporarily for those peak days when the customer entry is above average.  The trolley which is self powered has a compact POS system mounted with a hand scanner and can connect to a nearby data port or even work offline to manage the billing.

“We were looking for a solution wherein the store could quickly deploy an additional till within 10-15 minutes whenever the customer entry suddenly spikes above average. We, therefore, worked with Posiflex to innovate and create a mobile-trolley fixture which is self powered, has a compact POS mounted with a handheld scanner and has enough space to hold the shopping bags and products. Posiflex continues to work with HyperCity in delivering customer satisfaction by way of faster checkouts at all HyperCity stores.”

“There is tremendous potential in the Indian retail market. With hundreds of malls that are projected to open in the coming years, the sector is expected to invest around USD 500 million in retail technology service solutions in the current financial year (2010). This could go further up to USD 1.2 billion in the next four to five years. So it was an important strategic milestone for us to have a direct presence in India.”
