Bharti Wal-Mart unveils its expansion plan for the next seven years
Bharti Wal-Mart Private Limited, a joint venture (JV) between Bharti Enterprises and Wal-Mart, is expected to open 10 to 15 B2B wholesale cash-and-carry facilities and employ approximately 5,000 people over the next seven years. “We are initially targeting to open our cash-and-carry stores in Tier II & Tier III cities. We have begun registration of membership in Punjab in advance of our first store opening to enable us to better forecast and serve the needs of our commercial customers. The JV`s focus has been to put in place a robust back-end infrastructure,” reveals the company spokesperson. To make up for the paucity of trained professional, Bharti Wal-Mart has also entered into a Public-Private partnership with the Punjab Government and set up a training center where students can enroll on a 100% scholarship to gain world-class knowledge about best practices in retail and cash-and-carry operations so that they are job-ready. Over the next seven years, the venture is expected to open 10 to 15 wholesale cash-and-carry facilities. A typical facility will stand between 50,000 and 100,000 square feet and sell a wide range of fruits and vegetables, groceries and staples, stationery, footwear, clothing, consumer durables and other general merchandise items.
