Court fines Bata Stores for using plastic bags

Concerned with the environmental hazards posed by plastic bags, a city court has slapped footwear major Bata Shoe Stores with a fine of Rs 1 lakh for using the banned plastic bags. Metropolitan Magistrate (MM) Shailender Malik in his order directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to utilise the penalty money for distribution of bio-degradable bags among small shopkeepers to create awareness about the eco-friendly steps. The court also directed manager of the store Mahmud Hasan to be present in the court till its rising for the day.
