Shoprite Holdings, Africa’s largest food retailer, has called off its franchisee deal in India with real estate developer Nirmal Lifestyle Group, probably due to its partner’s failure to open more stores and the long delay in opening up the retail sector for foreign investment. The move will bring down shutters on Shoprite Hyper at Mulund in Mumbai, the South African firm’s only hypermarket in the country, opened in 2004.
It is learnt that Future Group is buying the 6,500-sqft outlet at Nirmal Lifestyle Mall along with its employees to set up a food store that will be rebranded Food Republic
