Tihar Sets Up Restaurant, Trained Inmates to Cook and Serve

New Delhi: Tihar Jail is working to keep its inmates happy -- the jail authorities have set up a restaurant on Jail Road near Janakpuri where inmates will be cooking and serving food.

Inmates who were recently trained in hotel management, will cook and serve food at this restaurant. The air-conditioned restaurant is operational, but is yet to be launched on a full-scale.

"Our aim is to serve quality food at reasonable rates. Several inmates of Tihar's semi-open prison have undergone hotel management training under a ministry of tourism initiative and now they'll be trying their hands on it professionally," Tihar Jail PRO Sunil Gupta said.

The restaurant, with a seating capacity of 50 persons, is open from 10 am to 10 pm. It will also deliver food in areas falling within a radius of one km.

Around 10 of the 45-50 inmates trained in house-keeping, cooking and hotel management are working at the restaurant.

More workers will be brought in if the workload increases, Mr Gupta said, adding that "earnings of the restaurant will be used in welfare programmes for the jail inmates."

The restaurant has received good response and the people are excited about the kind of food that will be served here.

This initiative is a part of the 'Happiness programme' which, together with the help of Art of Living, is aimed at helping the inmates get rid of "physical, mental and emotional" stress, so as to transform their behaviour and lives.
