Xiaomi, the country's largest smartphone maker, will foray into the white goods space in India by next year. This will make Xiaomi a full-fledged consumer electronics firm in India.
Presently, Xiaomi officials are identifying potential categories including air-conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, laptops and small appliances such as vacuum cleaners and water purifiers for the Indian market. The entry into the new segment will open up newer avenues of growth for the company in the Indian market where it is growing over 100% year-on-year.
An industry executive said, "The appliances which Xiaomi will launch in India will all have internet connectivity. They would be launched online first, then in exclusive brand stores. Xiaomi also plans to make them available to large electronic and mobile phone retailers."
Xiaomi is further looking at entering 500 new towns in India next year to expand its presence in offline stores with its range of smartphones and eventually televisions and appliances. At present, the company is focusing on the top 50 markets in the country for its offline presence.
