Inspired by the myriad local stories in Kochi, and rich history of Kochi-Muziris, Studio HBA designed Port Muziris, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel by Marriott International, to establish the property as part of the city’s newest cultural experience.
Designed in earthy colours of mustard and indigo, the hotel provides a homely feeling through the story of its fictional heroine Lila- the muse behind the project’s aesthetics.
Lila’s personality is reflected across the hotel, striking the perfect balance between traditional and contemporary elements that make the space feel timeless and always welcoming.
“By immersing ourselves in the history of Kochi- Muziris region to creating the story of Lila, we have tried to infuse a local flavour in this project. By using natural materials like rough plaster, rattan and colored tiles, we have found a way to integrate the warmth of old Kochi homes into a modern and contemporary setting,” said Abhishek Mathur, Director, Studio HBA by adding that Port Muziris is a bold and fresh take on the Kerala culture revealing a rich palimpsest of its native art forms, materials, and folklore.
Port Muziris has been conceptualised as Lila’s home, and this can be felt right from the time guest enter the reception, designed to look like a spacious living room.
Lila’s passion for art and graphics can be felt throughout the hotel, and can be seen in the various design elements across the property. A case in point is the vibrant and beautiful mural done by a local artist at the entrance. Although she is a fictional character, her presence can be tangibly felt across the hotel. Lending it a human touch, her presence makes guests feel completely at home.
The hotel has been designed to allow as much natural light as possible to enter its spaces to provide a feeling of well being. The relaxed atmosphere of the property continues in the guest rooms, which have cosy seating with an intricate Rattan weave, reminiscent of old Kochi homes. The property features evocative works from twelve local artists and photographers deriving from the essence of Malayali culture.
