Lavazza to make India its 2nd largest market

Lavazza, which sold its Barista chain to Carnation Hospitality earlier this August, is palnning to target India as its second largest market after Italy, according to a report ublished by Hindu Business Line.

Italy currently accounts for 60-65 per cent of the global business of coffee chain and closed a turnover of Rs 150 crore in 2013.

“Our target is on the away-from-home coffee market and there is a huge opportunity for us,” said Silvio Zaccareo, Managing Director, Lavazza India.

As of now, India accounts for less than 3 per cent of Lavazza’s global business.

“We are one of the major players in the country touching almost all star hotels and major corporate premises”, he added.

The coffee market in India is pegged at 1 lakh tonnes, and around 20 per cent of this is consumed away from home. Value estimation for this market is not readily available because of the complexity of ascertaining the end prices at different levels of the value chain.

However, according to him, the company is yet to make profits in India and is here with a long-term view.
