French Bakery chain L'opera Opens Its Store In Ambiance Mall
French Bakery chain L'opera Opens Its Store In Ambiance Mall

Known for bringing the original bakery flavours of France to India, L’Opera, the French patisserie and boulangerie, has recently opened its outlet at PVR Directors Cut Ambiance Mall in Vasant Kunj. With fittings and furniture brought in from overseas, the outlet recreates the atmosphere of France.

Kazem Samandari, the executive chairman of the L’opera chain said “We have been partners with PVR for a long time. So when PVR approached us to open an outlet for the Director's Cut we immediately agreed. The price has been kept a little high at this particular outlet considering the fact that our target audience here is people from the upper class. The lack of easily accessible French bakery products in India is the reason why we are into this business. We have got Paris to India. When people come here to eat and say 'This reminds me exactly of what I had in Paris' makes us happy and proud. What makes L'Opera stand apart from the rest of the bakery outlets is its taste, which I can assure that you won't get anywhere else. We don't use any artificial or colouring material. The price may seem higher when compared to other bakeries but there is no compromise with taste”.

L’Opera outlet can accommodate around 20 people at a time. Even the menu has been especially curated so that there are not just the pastries but sandwiches, baguettes, croissants and some of others.

L’Opera chef Amit said “French bakery products are vast when it comes to variety. So, it was not easy for me to introduce just five new items for this outlet. We initially had decided 10 items and finally came down to five. And all of these will evoke the authentic taste of bakeries available in France”.

L'Opera makes over 26 types of breads every day, some of which include baguettes, croissants, pain paysan (peasant bread), Swiss tress, macarons, quiches, verrines, teas and jams.

L'Opera has opened five outlets this year, including the one in Ambiance Mall and plans to extend to other cities as well.

Bakery brand The Baker's Dozen bags USD 5 million in pre-series A round led by Fireside Ventures

One of India’s leading homegrown artisan bakery The Baker’s Dozen has raised USD 5 million of funding including debt.

Marquee consumer VC fund, Fireside Ventures led the equity investment, marking its first presence in the D2C Baking & Confectionery space with TBD.

TBD will use this new influx of capital to further key product innovation, team building, brand marketing efforts, distribution expansion, and in upgrading the company’s tech play.

“We must understand that bakery goods are now more commonly consumed daily as opposed to simply being a treat, and TBD is as much of a millennial favorite as it is a mother’s trusted choice.  Artisan@scale is our ‘mantra’ and we are best known for putting the widest variety of 100% whole wheat, preservative-free sourdough breads on the Indian map,” shared Aditi Handa, Co-founder and Head Baker.

Part of the amount raised will further be utilized for capital expenditure and to increase production capacity to match the increasing product demand.

The investment will also help the brand strengthen its Indian presence by amplifying its reach in tier I and tier II cities, followed by an international expansion across the Middle-East and subsequently across Southeast Asian markets.

Prayag Mohanty, Principal, Fireside Ventures, who will also be joining The Bakers Dozen as a board member, said, “Our decision to invest in The Baker's Dozen (TBD), is backed by our fund thesis of looking for innovative white spaces within the overall D2C products space. TBD brings in the packaged version of artisanal bakery products which is addressing a huge market backed by technology innovations around processing and packaging at the backend.

TBD has grown 5x achieving sales of INR 30 Cr in 2021-22, fast becoming the preferred national bakery brand across e-commerce and Q-commerce marketplaces, servicing over 3 lakh orders month on month. It has grown very capital efficiently, being EBITDA positive the last two years. With the aim of marking 5x growth in the 18-24 months, the company is currently in the process of expanding their distribution footprint through more than 100 own stores and 1000 retail touchpoints across 25 cities in India.

TBD is also recognised as one of India’s first phygital retail bakery brands, providing unique interactive experiences for its customers by bridging the gap between a digital and physical world.

“TBD has been a bootstrapped business grown steadily and with a strong foundation. That strong base has helped our rapid growth over the last two years, and we felt that it was the right time for us to choose a partner who could not only help us scale our business via capital infusion, but also through mentorship and guidance. Having had the privilege of Kanwal as a mentor for us over the last few years, Fireside was undoubtedly our first choice to collaborate with, given their background in scaling consumer brands and that they were already TBD customers,” pointed Sneh Jain, Co-Founder and Managing Director, The Baker’s Dozen.

Kinder Joy Becomes Biggest Product Of Ferrero Rocher In India
Kinder Joy Becomes Biggest Product Of Ferrero Rocher In India

Its round chocolates in golden wrap may be the best known product of Ferrero Rocher, but it’s the tiny toys packed inside its top selling chocolate-confectionery product Kinder Joy that are now Ferrero India’s biggest product.

Stefano Pelle, managing director at Ferrero India said “India is a growing and very important market with big scope for category penetration. We don’t have a mass brand. We are working in that direction, especially in sugar confectionery, and later, within the enlarged chocolate market, not strictly chocolate products. it would not be easy for the company to compete in mainstream chocolates market. We wouldn’t make something that is there in the mainstream that wouldn’t be Ferrero then. Comparatively, the upcoming products will be among the most affordable products in the Ferrero universe. This doesn’t mean we won’t have our premium products. In spite of the fact that the environment was turbulent, we still saw some double digit growth. While the chocolate market has been facing some headwinds, Ferrero has been growing in double digits."

Ferrero India makes 900 million toys, of which 270 million are used for domestic consumption and the rest are exported, either as part of Kinder Joy packs or as toys.

The Italian firm, which reported €10.3-billion revenues for the year ended August 2016, has only one manufacturing unit in India in Baramati, Maharashtra, but it has some exclusive vendors in the country who manufacture toys only for Ferrero.

The Italian firm, which sells chocolates, bakery products, snacks, spreads, mints and drinks across over 170 countries, has begun testing entry-level confectionery brands in India as it looks to broadbase its portfolio and step up share in an intensely competitive market.
