IKEA stops sale of veg biryani, samosa at Hyderabad store

IKEA, the Swedish home furnishings giant, has stopped the sale of its vegetable biryani and samosas at the Hyderabad store. The decision came after a customer found caterpillar in the vegetable biryani served at its restaurant in Hyderabad.

The Swedish furniture maker has said that it takes food safety and quality very seriously and customer health is always a priority. It further stated that they will resume the sales of the two products after they have secured the review process.

The firm said, “Following an incident on 31st August 2018, when a customer encountered a foreign object in the dish he ordered, IKEA India has voluntarily stopped sales of two of its most appreciated products - Vegetarian Biryani and Samosa, sourced locally in India. IKEA follows strong internal processes to secure quality and takes full responsibility for its supply chain. IKEA India has initiated an internal review in order to take any corrective actions as needed.”

IKEA’s Hyderabad store can seat over 1,000 people. It is world’s largest restaurant of IKEA India.

During the first month of operation of IKEA store in Hyderabad, it has received a very positive response from the customers for the food.

After the customer registered a complaint in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), a penalty of Rs 11,500 was levied against the IKEA store under GHMC‘s norms.
