Coronavirus: Restaurants Across the World Come Up With Innovative Ideas For Survival

With the outbreak of Coronavirus, while some restaurants are shutting out their operations for the time being, there are restaurants that are coming up with their own delivery and curbside services. Most of the restaurants have started their own line of delivery with taking help from the delivery aggregators as they charge a significant amount of commission.

Restaurants are not only planning to go for deliveries but are also incorporating some innovative ideas to run their businesses. For example, Grato in West Palm Beach in the US has opened up its curbside outlet to cater to customers waiting outside of its outlets. Besides all the dishes in the menu, the chef there has also added ‘heat and serve’ (which you can easily heat and eat at home) dishes to the menu.

Similarly, another restaurant called Restaurant Iris is not only providing ‘heat and serve’ dishes but is also providing written heating instructions on its vacuum packed orders. Isn’t it great? One of its customers thanked the restaurant on the twitter by saying “Because of folks at Restaurant Iris, we are having a gourmet dinner.” He also urged his followers to support the local service industry.

Meanwhile, at a time like this where accessibility of stores and restaurants plays a bigger role in the sales, the Seattle based Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria is offering ‘family meal packs’ by making it available at the parking lots of supermarkets where customers can easily reach to their food.

Various high end restaurants and bars which despised delivery platforms and were never planning to go into the deliveries are now being forced to foray into this segment. For instance, high end tapas, restaurants and bars in New York like SushiOne and Sushi by Bou have announced its pickup and delivery option. They are also providing omakase box (which essentially is letting chef choose food for you) for delivery.

In India while delivery restaurants like KFC, McDonald’s and Dominoes are taking extreme precautions with their operations, small gourmet delivery brands like Hudson Chopsticks in Delhi, which delivers Pan-Asian delicacies is providing small packs of hand sanitizers with their orders.

The global hospitality industry is reeling under the utmost pressure to come up with innovative business ideas to make money and survive as it is very unlikely for the dine-in restaurants to recover from this pandemic anytime soon.
