Junk food, cold drink banned at Amarnath yatra
Junk food, cold drink banned at Amarnath yatra

Keeping in view the Supreme Court ruling of 2012 regarding the health of the Amarnath yatra pilgrims, the ban on the sale of cold drinks and junk food enroute the cave shrine will be strictly enforced from this year by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, reported PTI.

"There was a Supreme Court ruling in this regard in 2012, so the decision was taken to completely ban the sale and consumption of cold drinks and junk food enroute the cave shrine," shared Pankaj Anand, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, SASB.

An experts' committee, formed following the Supreme Court's concern over the large number of pilgrim deaths in 2012, had cautioned the consumption of cold drinks and fried junk food as there is shortage of oxygen enroute the cave shrine.

"Health experts say that it becomes difficult to digest such food items in the absence of adequate oxygen supply which gives rise to breathing problems hence make yatra difficult for the pilgrims," added Anand.

The decision of banning these food items was in place in 2013 and 2014 also but it would be strictly enforced from this year.

The SASB has also asked the langer organisers to desist from distributing fried food items and cold drinks as they are not good for health in low oxygen conditions.

It has instructed the organisers to display the menu of the food items being prepared and distributed by them to the pilgrims, he said.

The shrine board authorities will take stringent action against those who violate the orders.

"In the past also action was taken and those who are found violating these orders would be blacklisted in future," he said.

Himalaya Food to Rebuild French Fries Business with Rs 700 Crore Target

The chairman of Himalaya Food International announced that the company is working on reviving its french fries business in the frozen and canned food processing industry.

They plan to install a 50,000 tonne per annum french fries line and a 12,000 tonne potato speciality line, with a completion target of December 2023 to align with the potato season starting in March 2024.

According to a letter by Himalaya Foods International Ltd (HFIL) chairman Man Mohan Malik to the shareholders, the new french fries line and potato speciality line have the capability to generate Rs 700 crore in additional revenue at maximum capacity.

Himalaya Foods International Ltd (HFIL) was previously in a joint venture (JV) with Simplot USA. However, a dispute arose between the two partners and the matter was taken to arbitration in Singapore.

As per reports, the American joint venture partner had requested a refund of USD 14 million in relation to the sale of the french fries line and specialty potato lines.

The tribunal has ordered Simplot to return the equipment related to the french fries and potato specialty lines, while Himalaya Foods International Ltd (HFIL) has been instructed to pay a sum of USD 3.96 million.

The company has paid off its debts with a consortium of banks through a one-time settlement (OTS) of Rs 82.80 crore.

Himalaya Food International's current focus is on reinforcing its working capital and generating resources from non-core assets. They also aim to fulfill their backlog of export orders.

The chairman mentioned that there is a high demand for french fries and other fried and frozen potato products both in India and around the world.

He further added that Gujarat has emerged as a major center for exporting potato-based products owing to extensive contract farming and favorable weather conditions.

Rather than relying on the conventional sources in Europe and North America, the regions of South-East Asia, Japan, and the Middle East are turning to Gujarat for their french fries supply.

SLAY Coffee adopts AR Technology to use India's first coffee recommendation engine
SLAY Coffee adopts AR Technology to use India's first coffee recommendation engine

Bengaluru-based coffee start-up SLAY has introduced the country’s very first Coffee Recommendation Engine in the form of an AR filter.

Coffee is one of the most dynamic beverages in the world that can be prepared and presented in a variety of ways. This constant development in the preparation style, flavours and combinations of coffee leads to an extensive menu with confusing names like Macchiato, Ristretto or Affogato - transforming the process of choosing a cup of coffee into a task, which only adds up to the worries of consumers rather than easing them.

By introducing its own coffee-recommending AR filter, SLAY Coffee intends to make this task of picking out a coffee an uncomplicated one. With a few quirky questions to better understand their coffee preferences - such as whether one drinks coffee with or without milk, flavours, hot or cold and so on - the AR filter will recommend a coffee that is perfect for the consumers’ needs and moods.

The filter is available on SLAY Coffee’s Instagram page. All one has to do is click on the filter, answer the four questions with just a nod of their heads and receive a coffee recommendation.

Not only that, but the filter also generates an exclusive coupon code that consumers can redeem during their next coffee purchase on Zomato.

Augmented Reality (AR) filters are computer-generated effects that work with the users’ camera, designed to be superimposed on real-life images and shareable on their social network.

With social media turning into an easily accessible medium with the tech-savvy generation, SLAY Coffee’s AR filter aims at reaching out to maximum coffee lovers to make their coffee discovery journey effortless. The filter offers them an opportunity to embrace new variants of coffee at the tip of their fingers, thereby creating an experience they want to repeat while bolstering the brand’s vision of democratizing great coffee.

Restaurateur Navneet Kalra's anticipatory bail rejected by Delhi court
Restaurateur Navneet Kalra's anticipatory bail rejected by Delhi court

A Delhi court on Thursday refused to grant anticipatory bail to owner of ‘Khan Chacha’ Navneet Kalra in connection with the oxygen concentrators hoarding case.

He was reported to seize oxygen concentrators required by Covid-patients from his upscale restaurants including 'Khan Chacha' in Delhi.

"Application is dismissed," Additional Session Judge Sandeep Garg said.

Kalra moved court earlier this week to seek bail in the case, fearing arrest.

According to officials, 524 oxygen concentrators were recovered from three restaurants owned by Kalra and it is suspected that he has left Delhi along with his family.

On Wednesday, the court had reserved the order on the pre-arrest bail after hearing the arguments of both the prosecution and defense at length.

During the proceedings, Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava had opposed the plea and told the court that Kalra's custodial interrogation is required and that bail should not be granted as he is an influential person.

"His intention was to cheat the public at large and wrongfully gain. Had Delhi Police not busted the racket, many people would have been cheated," the public prosecutor said. The prosecutor had also apprised the court about a lab report which showed that the seized oxygen concentrators are not working, have poor quality and their working capacity is only 20.8 per cent.

Senior advocate Vikas Pahwa, representing the accused, asked the court how his client can be accused of selling the oxygen concentrators at exorbitant prices if there is no ceiling price fixed by the government. The senior advocate emphasised that selective leaks are made by the Delhi Police against Kalra and that he is being made a scapegoat to divert the attention from core issues.

Kalra also owns popular restaurant Town Hall in Khan Market.

The latest funding will be utilised for meeting working capital needs and to boost automation in the existing distribution centres and warehouses, shared a statement.

“The latest debt round completes the funding requirements for the company’s annual business plan. It will be used to support select new lines of growth and build related physical as well as digital assets,” said Chinna Pardhasaradhi, CFO, WayCool Foods.

The supply-chain startup aims to achieve 70 per cent digital and mechanical automation across all distribution units by mid-2021, in turn improving process flow, efficiency, and eliminating error-prone mundane activities.

“Samunnati and InnoVen capital have been our long-term partners in growth, and the present funding lines are a natural evolution of this partnership. We welcome RBL Bank to our platform. The innovative instruments that we are developing in partnership with RBL Bank will free the business from working capital as a growth limiter,” added Karthik Jayaraman, CEO, WayCool Foods.
