Bajaj Electricals' Nirlep Appliances Receives 'Zero Waste to Landfill' certification by Intertek

Nirlep Appliances, the subsidiary of Bajaj Electricals has announced that its manufacturing unit has received a ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ certification by globally renowned quality assurance, product testing and certification agency Intertek.

The brand has received this coveted certification for diversion rates exceeding 99% of waste to landfill from two manufacturing units situated at Aurangabad, Maharashtra. This is recognition of the brand’s eco-conscious efforts and avant-garde waste management system for diverting waste by reusing, recycling, or using it for waste-to-energy (WTE) purpose, thus ensuring nearly zero waste to landfill.

Nirlep Appliances has implemented a holistic SOP for all its units in a sustained manner. The units which produce aluminium non-stick cookware, hard anodised cookware, and pressure cookers, generate various types of wastes. This waste is usually disposed of by selling it to scrap dealers, who then sell it to recyclers. The brand was already following almost 70% of requirement to reduce landfill waste, but it aimed to achieve 100% efficiency to make a sustained impact.  The new SOP implemented includes, Waste identification and classification; Waste segregation, handling and storage; Careful selection of vendors for waste collection; Tracking end-to-end process flow for all the waste categories; Maintaining waste disposal data and records, and calculation for waste diversion; Sustaining the initiative and continuous improvement by reducing the waste.

Following these steps, the company has been able to recycle 247 tonnes of non-hazardous and hazardous waste. Around 50+ types of waste have been identified and tracked in terms of their origin and disposal.

Anuj Poddar, Executive Director, Bajaj Electricals and Nirlep, said, “Environment sustainability is a crucial aspect of any responsible corporate today. We are committed to reducing our carbon foot print and have integrated, holistic waste management as a central part of our manufacturing process. Our aim is to create a safe and healthy workplace and institute a model that others in the sector can emulate to become environmentally conscious too. The ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ certification by Intertek is definitely an encouraging milestone that has given us the impetus to amplify our efforts further.”

Intertek’s Zero Waste to Landfill Certification program is comprehensive and provides improved credibility and visibility to organisations’ efforts to improve environmental impact.
