Scandalous Foods, an innovative one-stop-shop redefining post-meal impulse-buying consumption of Indian sweets in the restaurant and catering industry, has raised Rs 1.6 crore in an ongoing pre-seed funding round. Anthill Angel Fund, EvolveX, Value360, and Sapphireink Ventures, alongside notable angel investors such as Wow! Momo founder Sagar Daryani, Kamnaa Aggrawal, Vikas Aggarwal, Co-founder of We Founder Circle and ex-IndiaMart, and Celebrity Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi, have backed the venture.

The infusion of funds will primarily fuel the expansion of Scandalous Foods' production unit in Nasik, introducing automation for enhanced efficiency. Simultaneously, the funding will facilitate an extensive increase in touchpoints from 250 to 2000 within a year, expanding institutional sales to more cities and doubling operations in Mumbai, Thane, and Nasik. Additionally, Scandalous Foods plans to invest in product development, creating more Indian desserts with extended shelf life and irresistible taste, aiming to tap into the HoReCa industry as a B2B player.

Scandalous Foods has identified a significant opportunity worth $20 billion in the post-meal impulse-buying sector for traditional Indian sweets. Venturing beyond, the brand has introduced single-serve formats for mithais in restaurants and hotels, with plans to diversify into ethnic bars, cookies, cupcakes, and mithai sachets.

In its one-year span, Scandalous Foods has achieved a remarkable milestone by selling nearly 14 lakh pieces of sweets. The brand challenges the misconception that frozen food compromises taste, emphasizing that frozen food retains an impressive 97 percent freshness, texture, and taste when executed correctly, offering a safer alternative. Serving the HoReCa sector, the brand addresses challenges of wastage and pilferage with sweets boasting a generous six-month shelf life.

Recognizing the underexplored potential of sweets in restaurant menus due to the need for skilled labor, Scandalous Foods provides a solution that seamlessly integrates these treats without additional capital and operational expenditures. The success story continues with consistent month-on-month growth, witnessing a remarkable 10x increase in customers in monthly orders over three quarters. During the initial nine months of the fiscal year 2023-24 (April to December 2023), the document disclosed a loss of 17.3 billion rupees ($207 million), alongside a revenue of $1.02 billion. This revenue contrasts with $1.05 billion generated during the fiscal year 2022-23.

India's stock market has witnessed a notable 28 percent surge over the past year, prompting numerous companies to contemplate listings. However, investors are now exercising greater caution. Paytm, a digital payments firm, experienced an 80 percent decrease in its shares following its 2021 listing, with analysts attributing it to its lofty valuation. Similarly, Swiggy's competitor Zomato saw a decline in shares post its 2021 listing but has observed a resurgence this year after reporting two consecutive profitable quarters.

Initially valued at $10.7 billion by investors in 2022, Swiggy primarily focused on meal deliveries but has since diversified into groceries and restaurant bookings.

Annapurna Swadisht Limited (ASL), a Kolkata-based food and beverage company, has reported a noteworthy near-100 percent surge in its revenue from operations, reaching Rs 131.13 crore for the half-year ending September 30, 2023, compared to Rs 65.61 crore in the same period last year. The company's profit after tax also witnessed a substantial increase of 128 percent, reaching Rs 6.56 crore during the same period.

During H1FY24 (April–September 2023), ASL's operating profit (EBITDA) experienced a significant upswing of almost 163 percent, reaching Rs 13 crore, compared to Rs 4.95 crore in H1FY23. The company's improved EBITDA margins of 9.92 percent in H1FY24, showcasing an improvement of 238 basis points from 7.55 percent in the previous comparative period, were attributed to better economies of scale, entry into high-margin products, and normalized raw material prices.

Shreeram Bagla, MD, Annapurna Swadisht, said, “The increase in top line during the first half of this fiscal was primarily due to the addition of new capacities penetration into newer geographies along with better penetration in some of the existing markets.”

We remain bullish about the Bharat story, which lies in India's rural and semi-urban markets. We have been witnessing good traction in demand from these markets. With increasing per capita income, we expect demand to grow even further in the days to come. We have expanded our manufacturing capacity by setting up a new plant at Dhulagarh in West Bengal, which has already commenced operations. We look to strengthen our presence in the existing markets by ramping up our distribution footprint and rolling out more SKUs,” Bagla said.

With five owned manufacturing units and six contractual/leasing arrangements across multiple locations, ASL primarily caters to Tier III and Tier IV markets in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh. The company's portfolio, comprising close to 72 SKUs across various categories, is available through over 6 lakh retail touchpoints.

Recently listed on the NSE-SME platform in September 2022, ASL raised close to Rs 65.43 crore through a preferential issue of equity shares and warrants by the end of September 2023. In the second quarter ending September 2023, Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd announced a consolidated net loss of Rs 109.15 crore due to exceptional items. A year ago, during the July-September period, it had reported a profit of Rs 4.35 crore, as stated in a regulatory filing by Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd (CDEL). Despite the loss, its revenue from operations in this fiscal's second quarter increased by 12.75 percent to Rs 258.40 crore, compared to Rs 229.16 crore in the same period last year. Notably, exceptional items accounted for expenses of Rs 119.22 crore. CDEL reported a Profit before exceptional items and tax of Rs 3.50 crore.

The financial report highlights that Tanglin Developments Limited (subsidiary) received its Global Village Second tranche sale proceeds of Rs 349 crores, with certain deductions for GV Tech Parks' expenses. An amount of Rs. 45.22 crore is recognized as an expense under exceptional items for non-satisfaction of certain CP’s as agreed in the investment agreement. Additionally, Tanglin Developments repaid Rs 93 crore for its corporate guarantee liability, settling it fully as agreed in the settlement agreement with the lender of Coffee Day Global Ltd and Sical Logistics.

Total expenses for Coffee Day Enterprises Ltd reached Rs 258.46 crore, reflecting a 5.18 percent increase in the September quarter. Revenue from the coffee and related business stood at Rs 247.53 crore, with an additional Rs 11.32 crore from hospitality services during Q2/FY24. The total revenue for the September quarter amounted to Rs 261.96 crore, marking a 4.79 percent increase.
