Reliance Retail plans to embed its e-commerce app JioMart into WhatsApp within six months. With this, the Mukesh Ambani-led firm looks to ramp up its retail and grocery business in India.
This integration of JioMart with WhatsApp will allow the 400 million users of India’s most popular messaging service to order products without having to leave the app.
In 2020, Reliance had secured about $26 billion from investors such as Google and Facebook for its digital and retail arms as it takes on Amazon.com Inc and Walmart-backed Flipkart in the country. The company has been trying to move away from its mainstay oil and energy business.
Also, Facebook had invested $5.7 billion for a 9.99 percent stake in Jio Platform last year.
JioMart was started in May 2020 with plans to be operational across 200 cities in India. The e-commerce venture of Reliance's retail arm offers free express grocery delivery from neighborhood mom-and-pop stores.
