Netflix, Mattel collaborates on second 'He-Man' show

Netflix is collaborating with Mattel Television for an animated series based on the He-Man IP.

Netflix and Mattel will be working on a CG-animated series for kids called “He-Man and the Master of the Universe”. This marks the second collaboration between both the companies, joining the previously announced 2D anime series “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” with Kevin Smith.

“He-Man and the Master of the Universe” will be revolving around a young lost prince who transforms into the hero He-Man and battles the evil Skeletor for protecting the cosmos. Masters will target a broader family audience, while He-Man will specifically reach that younger demo.

The new show is produced by Mattel Television with Adam Bonnett, Christopher Keenan, and Rob David as EPs. Jeff Matsuda and Susan Corbin are producing the show and Bryan Millier is its story editor. The animation services on the show are being provided by Taiwanese animation studio CGCG and Toronto-based studio House of Cool.

Fred Soulie, SVP of Content Distribution and Business Development, Mattel, said, “Masters of the Universe is one of the most iconic global franchises of all time, with a 30-year history and a passionate fan base.”

“The entire team at Mattel is excited to introduce the world of He-Man to a new generation and, together with the talented team at Netflix, to reimagine the classic characters in a way that appeals to kids and families today, while also resonating with the fans who grew up with them,” Soulie further stated.

Mattel’s reboot of the Masters of the Universe franchise also includes an ongoing DC Comics series, a new version of the ‘80s toys hitting shelves’ in next fall.
