Ericsson and Huawei Extend Global Patent Cross-Licensing Agreement

Ericsson and Huawei have recently reaffirmed their commitment through a renewed multi-year global patent cross-licensing pact, encompassing patents essential to standards that are vital for their product lines, spanning 3G, 4G, and 5G cellular technologies. This agreement encompasses the sales of network infrastructure and consumer devices by both companies, effectively granting them worldwide access to each other's patented and standardized technologies.

Christina Petersson, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Ericsson expressed, "We are delighted to announce the extension of our global cross-licensing agreement with Huawei. Both corporations are substantial contributors to mobile communication standards and acknowledge the importance of one another's intellectual property. This accord underscores the mutual commitment of both entities to upholding the sanctity of intellectual property and ensuring that cutting-edge technological advancements are shared across the industry. A well-balanced approach to licensing is pivotal in serving the interests of patent holders and implementers equitably, fostering robust and sustainable industry development, ultimately benefiting consumers and businesses worldwide."

Leveraging their existing portfolio of intellectual property rights (IPR) licensing agreements, Ericsson anticipates that its IPR licensing revenues for the entirety of 2023 will approximate SEK 11 billion (EUR 0.92 billion).

Over the course of several decades, Ericsson has played a pivotal role as a contributor to 3GPP and the advancement of global mobile standards. Ericsson's patent reservoir, boasting more than 60,000 granted patents, derives its value from its stature as a prominent 5G vendor and sustained annual investments exceeding $4 billion (€3.71 billion) in research and development (R&D).
