Beating the odds, online grocery retailer BigBasket has come up with a new concept of delivering products in Delhi NCR using electric cars. Currently the company is in talks with Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles to get pollution free vehicles.
The move comes soon after the Delhi government had announced the ‘odd-even’ traffic rule to curb the increasing air pollution in the city.
The Bengaluru-based startup has already deployed a prototype of Reva but an official deal is yet to be signed, company officials said. Confirming the development, BigBasket cofounder & CEO Hari Menon said, "We will first start with Delhi and then move to other cities as well."
“Besides being environment-friendly, deploying Reva electric cars will also help BigBasket bring down its cost of delivery significantly. It would reduce running cost by 30-40% after moving to electric car delivery system," he added.
Currently, BigBasket uses Tata Ace delivery vehicles that run on diesel. It has a fleet of 90 plus delivery vehicles in the National Capital Region that includes places such as Gurgaon and Noida.
BigBasket is expected to start electric car delivery in NCR in three to six months, starting with around 100 electric cars.
Menon also said that the company is planning to use robotic load picking for its warehouse, thus saving cost and time for loading and unloading.
